Riverside County Animal Shelters will be closed on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

Post Date:06/09/2016 8:45 AM

All Riverside County Animal Shelters will be closed to the public on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016 and will reopen on Tuesday, July 5th, 2016.

This is the busiest time of the year for Animal Shelters due to lost and/or injured pets.

Tips for keeping your pets safe during firework celebrations:

  1. Loud noises not only terrify pets but can be hazardous, try not to include pets when celebrations include fireworks. If you cannot leave your pet unattended at home, keep it leashed and under your direct control at all times
  2. During a fireworks celebration even pets that are normally kept outdoors should be brought inside if possible, preferably with a radio or TV turned on to hide the jarring noises
  3. Don’t leave pets in a parked car, high temperatures put your pet at risk. Example: A parked car on an 85 degree day with windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes, after 30 minutes the temperature can reach 120 degrees. Just times that by our frequent 100 + degree summer weather and it can quickly become deadly.
  4. All pets, even those kept indoors full-time should be micro-chipped and wear collars with ID tags. Indoor only pets can become so frightened during fireworks displays that they take desperate measures to escape the noise, including breaking through window or door screens.
  5. Keep your pet well hydrated and consider giving your pet a nice cool shower with the hose as our days get warmer, kiddy pools in a yard can often provide pets a comfortable dip.
  6. If your pet is scared by fireworks, ask your Veterinarian for help, there are medications and techniques that can help alleviate a pet’s fear and anxiety
  7. If you find a lost pet either take it to the address on the tag or bring it to the local animal shelter. Our night drop boxes fill up quickly and staff will do their best to unload and reopen the boxes as soon as possible.
