Impacts of Organic Waste Disposal in Landfills

Landfills are the third largest source of methane in California with organic waste landfill disposal accounting for 20% of the state’s methane. To reduce methane statewide methane emissions, the State enacted Senate Bill 1383 to increase organic waste recovery and recycling.

Senate Bill 1383 – Organic Waste Recycling Requirements

Beginning January 1, 2022, residences, businesses, and multifamily properties are required to subscribe to an organic waste collection service. Organic waste consists of food scraps, yard debris, and food soiled paper.

The City’s franchise waste hauler, Waste Management, provides SB 1383 compliant recycling and organics services. Please refer to the WM Service Guide for additional service information
